Do you ever wonder if base housing is for you? Or, maybe you know it’s not for you, but it’s your only option? There are plenty of people having the same thoughts and we’re here to help you pilot your adventure in the world of military housing to help make your move as pleasant as possible. No matter where you go, there will always be reasons to like or dislike certain living standards. It’s important not to get too hung up on the things you find to be bothersome and instead try to adapt yourself to them. We know it can be tricky to try to predict the outcome of something though, so we have taken it upon ourselves to break down a few things to consider as they relate to Military Housing.

First and foremost, recognize that there may not be a great way to escape from your job at the end of the day. When you live and work on base, it will be hard to allow yourself to really “shut off” when you are home. It’s important to consider this when you are deciding whether or not base life is meant for you.

Quiet hours are often something that is mandated in communities like these to allow for your active duty neighbors with crazy schedules to get their rest. It’s important for you and your family to be considerate to your neighbors as it is likely that you will be sharing walls or yards with them.

Try to get comfortable with getting out and doing things in your community. More often than not, there will be plenty to do either on your own or with your family. Pools, theaters, and bowling alleys, just to name a few, will help you and your family not only adjust to your new way of living, but it will also allow for relationships to form.

Keep in mind that using your cellphone while driving or speeding on base can result in losing your driving privileges; something I know you don't want to have happen!

Another big no-no is leaving the base without your Military ID. Keep that thing handy with you wherever you go!

One of the things that might be the hardest to get accustomed to for new military families is the many sounds that you will be exposed to while living on base. You may hear the National Anthem, gunfire, or even cadence calls while you're home. If you're new to living on base you'll notice cars pulling over to the side of the road when the Anthem comes on as a sign of respect.

While you might find that the rules and regulations that come with living on base can feel less than freeing, try to consider the positives that can come from it. There are many families that look back on their time on base and miss it. They miss the sense of community that they had and the memories that were made. For families with children, you may find that you have provided them with an unforgettable childhood that they will talk about for years.  Never forget that it always goes back to the fact that life is what you make of it; now make it good!

Did you know that you can live off base in a home that you own and the military will pay you for it? Yes, it's true! Contact us to learn more about how to use your BAH to buy your own home!
