How to Carefully Continue a Holiday Traditions in a Pandemic
Sipping my morning coffee, I’ll find myself daydreaming. Before the day gets rolling, I’ll savor a quiet moment, often thinking of the good people and good times at each of our duty stations. For example, I recall an early October day where Fall leaves were beginning their migration from the arching branches overhead. As if doing somersaults on the crisp breeze, the colorful foliage would stick its landing in the corner of our base house entry.
Thanksgiving
Pandemic or not, our extended family is spread out from state to state and we can’t always get together. However, with the ease of using an online video platform, we can be in touch beyond just individual phone calls. Tell me what you think of this notion -
What if I share a family favorite recipe ahead of time (a dish that is usually a part of our Thanksgiving feast) and then have each member videoing while fixing it? Results may vary! But it might bring back heartwarming memories of everyone crowding in the kitchen at the same time.
With the highs and lows of 2020, I know our military family has an abundance of things to be thankful for. We’ll be looking forward to reviewing those blessings in family conversation.
Christmas
No matter which holiday fits your Decembering, here’s hoping you can find the inspiration you’ll need while still safely social distancing. If your inner battery needs a charge, take a peek at MilHousing Network on the socials. The posts by fellow mil spouses may bring a side of holly with the jolly of the season.
As for my plans? Well, since you’re asking -
With the calendar page currently in the month of October, am going to try to squirrel away some funds, now, for spreading Christmas cheer, later. Many charitable organizations are in dire need of filling their “wish lists” and that could make gift giving a little more meaningful.
Also, when venturing into my go-to store, I’ll try to remember the “Be Kind” sentiment, especially when the retail workers have been giving it their all since the pandemic began. Even when the weather outside has turned cold, the cheerful cashiers will likely make each customer feel warm and fuzzy inside - THAT is “a gift that keeps on giving”!
From November through January it might be a good idea to keep tabs on the latest scoop from the CDC as each holiday nears -
Honestly, I know we are all growing weary of wearing the mask, washing the hands and sterilizing the “high traffic” areas. Yet, it is important that we continue to stay safe through these COVID-19 times - even if it changes the dynamic of how we celebrate. I’d like to think we are each accountable for following health and safety guidelines - not just for our own protection but for the well-being of others. After all, looking out for the needs of others is at the heart of each special holiday.
