Living in San Antonio in October: Local Tips for Military Families

October is one of the most enjoyable times of year to experience San Antonio. For military families stationed at or PCSing to Joint Base San Antonio (JBSA), the month brings cooler temperatures, fall festivals, Halloween activities, cultural celebrations, and plenty of opportunities to explore the city beyond the installation.

Whether you're new to San Antonio or have been stationed here for a while, here are some local tips for making the most of October 2026.

1. Don't Assume October Means Cold Weather

San Antonio's October weather can still feel surprisingly warm.

The National Weather Service's 1991–2020 climate normals show an October 1 normal high of about 87°F and low of 65°F, with temperatures gradually becoming cooler as the month progresses.

In other words, don't pack away all your summer clothes just yet.

Military families should keep a mix of:

  • Lightweight shirts
  • Shorts and comfortable pants
  • Light jackets
  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Sun protection
  • Reusable water bottles

The weather can change considerably from the beginning to the end of the month.

2. Plan Outdoor Activities Earlier in the Day

October is a great month to explore San Antonio outdoors, but warmer afternoons are still possible.

Consider planning family walks, parks, farmers markets, and sightseeing for the morning or later afternoon when temperatures are more comfortable.

The Farmers & Artisans Market at Mission Marquee Plaza, for example, is scheduled for October 3 and October 17, 2026, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The market is free, family-friendly, and pet-friendly.

It's also a good opportunity for newly arrived families to explore the city's Mission Reach area.

3. Explore San Antonio's Fall Events

October brings a packed events calendar to San Antonio.

Military families can find everything from cultural festivals and concerts to Halloween events and outdoor activities throughout the city.

Some October 2026 options include:

  • Oktoberfest celebrations
  • Fall festivals
  • Live music
  • Farmers markets
  • Halloween events
  • Cultural festivals
  • Día de los Muertos celebrations
  • Outdoor family activities

Visit San Antonio's fall calendar lists numerous October events throughout the city.

4. Make Time for Día de los Muertos

If you're new to San Antonio, October is a particularly good time to experience the city's Mexican-American culture.

Día de los Muertos celebrations take place throughout San Antonio, with major events scheduled for late October.

In 2026, the Día de los Muertos San Antonio River Parade is scheduled for October 23. Muertos Fest at Hemisfair runs October 23–25, while Día de los Muertos celebrations at Historic Market Square take place October 24–25.

Many events are free and include music, art, food, community altars, performances, and family activities.

For military families who are new to the area, these events can be a fun way to experience one of San Antonio's defining cultural traditions.

5. Get Ready for Halloween

October is also a big month for family-friendly Halloween activities.

San Antonio's 2026 calendar includes events at places such as:

  • The DoSeum
  • Morgan's Wonderland
  • San Antonio Botanical Garden
  • Natural Bridge Caverns
  • SeaWorld San Antonio
  • Six Flags Fiesta Texas
  • LEGOLAND Discovery Center

For example, The DoSeum is hosting Halloween activities throughout October, while Morgan's Wonderland is holding its Halloween Bash on Saturdays throughout the month and on Halloween night.

Check event schedules before heading out because some activities require tickets or reservations.

6. Take Advantage of JBSA Family Resources

One of the advantages of living in the San Antonio military community is access to a wide range of installation resources.

JBSA's Military & Family Readiness Centers provide programs and services designed to support military families, including:

  • Relocation assistance
  • Employment assistance
  • Financial readiness
  • Family readiness
  • EFMP support
  • Deployment support
  • Workshops and consultations
  • Community referrals
  • Military and Family Life Counseling

Services are available across Fort Sam Houston, Lackland, and Randolph.

If you're new to JBSA, don't wait until you have a problem to find out what's available.

7. Get Involved With Your Installation Community

Each JBSA installation offers its own activities and resources.

Libraries, recreation programs, fitness centers, youth programs, and community events can be an easy way to meet other military families.

The JBSA library system, for example, serves Fort Sam Houston, Lackland, and Randolph and offers children's programs such as Storytime. October 2026 programming includes children's activities at both Lackland and Fort Sam Houston libraries.

For families with young children, these programs can be especially useful during the first few months after a PCS.

8. Give Yourself Time to Learn the Commute

If you're new to San Antonio, don't judge a neighborhood solely by how close it looks on a map.

JBSA includes three major installations spread across different parts of the San Antonio area. Your commute can vary significantly depending on your duty station, gate, work schedule, and traffic.

Before choosing a home, test-drive the commute during the hours you'll actually be traveling.

This is especially important if you're deciding between communities near:

  • Lackland
  • Fort Sam Houston
  • Randolph
  • Universal City
  • Live Oak
  • Converse
  • Schertz
  • Cibolo
  • Stone Oak
  • Northwest San Antonio

A slightly longer distance on a map doesn't always mean a longer commute—and the reverse can also be true.

9. Explore Beyond the Base

It's easy to spend most of your first few months going between work, home, and the installation.

Try to make time to explore the city, too.

October is a great month to visit:

  • The San Antonio River Walk
  • The Alamo
  • Historic Market Square
  • The Pearl
  • San Antonio Missions
  • Hemisfair
  • San Antonio Botanical Garden
  • Local parks and trails
  • Farmers markets

San Antonio's fall season includes cultural events, outdoor activities, live performances, and festivals throughout the city.

10. Keep an Eye on Weather Changes

October can bring significant temperature changes, and San Antonio can still experience warm weather early in the month.

Recent October conditions demonstrate how variable the month can be. In October 2025, San Antonio's average maximum temperature was 88.7°F, while the lowest temperature recorded during the month was 40°F.

That means a light jacket may be unnecessary one day and useful the next.

Check the forecast before outdoor activities, especially if you're planning a long day at a festival or theme park.

11. October Is a Good Time to Explore Neighborhoods

If you're renting or considering buying a home after your PCS, October can be a useful month to get familiar with different parts of San Antonio.

Don't limit your search to the neighborhood immediately outside the gate.

Spend time in several communities and consider:

  • Commute time
  • School options
  • Shopping
  • Parks
  • Restaurants
  • Healthcare access
  • Neighborhood amenities
  • Home prices
  • Property taxes
  • HOA fees
  • Long-term plans

Living in an area for a little while can give you a better feel for what works for your family than simply looking at listings online.

12. Make October Your "Get to Know San Antonio" Month

For families who recently PCS'd to JBSA, October can be more than another month on the calendar.

It's an opportunity to start building your life outside of work.

Try a new restaurant. Visit a local festival. Take the kids to a library event. Explore a neighborhood you've never visited. Walk the River Walk. Visit a farmers market. Find your family's favorite weekend activity.

Those little experiences can help San Antonio start feeling like home.
