Military Housing - General FAQs
As a new member of the military or a military family, it can be overwhelming trying to navigate and understand what you are supposed to do and the new lifestyle you are about to take on. Fortunately, you’re not alone and many people have wondered and gone through the same things! Before you make your move let’s take a look at a few of the most popular FAQs in regards to military housing.
What is military housing called?
The majority of new members will begin their career living on base during basic training in something called Barracks. The higher up you go in rank, the better housing options will be. For example, those that are single service members will oftentimes live in complexes that are similar to a dorm you’d find at a university while more senior level or married service members have the option to select to live in an apartment or a single-family home.
How do you qualify for military housing?
If you are a military member you are eligible to reside in base housing, if available. Did you know that if you are not military and want to live on base, the general public is also allowed to live on base? If the number of vacant homes on any base is above a certain amount, Public Law 104-106 states that anyone can rent them. (The option to do this may vary from base to base) In order to qualify, you must submit payment for a background and credit check (this is standard for each adult that would be living there) as well as provide proof of employment and income. Lastly, you will be required to submit a security deposit.
Is military housing free?
You will find that if you are living in barracks, you will not need to pay rent, outside of that, however, your BAH (Basic Allowance for Housing) is often used to pay for rent and part/all of your utilities pending usage.
Do military spouses get paid?
Military spouses are not given any monetary benefits however, service members do have the option to deduct a certain amount from their pay to give their spouse a monthly allotment if they so choose.
It is always a good idea to have a conversation with someone that is knowledgeable about your specific base as it is possible that some may have different rules/regulations. Are you getting ready to PCS? Contact us today!
