Military Housing Options
One of the perks of military life is the housing benefits. When it comes to where you live while on active duty, you have options to choose from that fit your needs.
Basic Training Barracks
During basic training, all military members live in the barracks. These quarters consist of shared bunks and bathrooms, with separate quarters for men and women.
Dorms, Apartments, and Barracks
After you complete basic training you’ll have housing options to choose from. Junior service members can be housed in units similar to college dorms, with a single or shared room and a shared living area, or an apartment complex.
Family Housing
If you are a married service member or have physical custody of children, you have the option to rent a larger apartment or single-family home. These are also available for senior service members.
Off Base Housing
If you qualify to live off base, you will receive a Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH) as part of your compensation. Your BAH rate is determined by your area’s cost of living, number of dependents, and your pay grade.
Housing for National Guard and Reserve
Military members who serve in the National Guard or Reserves are provided housing during their drill training, which occurs one weekend per month.
Guard members and reservists who are entitled to receive a housing allowance will receive a special BAH any time they’re on active duty for fewer than 30 days. If they are on active duty for 30 days or more, they’ll receive the full housing allowance rate (the same as active duty).
