PCS 2021 and Healthcare for Military Families
Blog by Mary E. Updates on how to navigate military healthcare in these unique Covid times as you prepare for your 2021 PCS.
On the Road
After packing up the family truck to head out on the open road, it is comforting to know that military families can count on the Nurse Advice Line for any medical issues that can potentially come up. Handy to have in your back pocket, the Military Health System (MHS) Nurse Advice Line number is 1-800-874-2273.
Arriving at Your New Assignment
Depending on which coverage region you are moving to, when you find yourself at your new address, click on the TRICARE website to enroll in the services of your area.
The West Region has Health Net at www.tricare-west.com
Out East it’s Humana Military at www.tricare-east.com
While settling in, think about reviewing which policy is the best choice for your family, either TRICARE Prime or TRICARE Select.
Virtual Access
Due to social distancing procedures, an initial appointment with your new healthcare provider may be arranged online. During your virtual session, the provider might explain the protocol for how to handle the in-person needs, such as completing immunizations or accomplishing student school physicals, etc.
Having access to the MHS online is a helpful resource, not only in the middle of a military move but for the well-being of you and yours in this Coronavirus timeframe. Over the last few months, the DHA leadership has been considering the success of the virtual appointments. Moving forward, perhaps patients could be connecting with their provider via phone calls or Skype or Facetime sessions not only for well-check’s, but with options for mental health needs and to support those involved in the Exceptional Family Member Program (EFMP). In the days ahead, we could potentially see a patient stationed at a remote assignment having the option to connect with a physician at a leading Military Treatment Facility (MTF), such as Walter Reed or Brooke, all via an online platform.
The Urgent Care Option
Sometimes, a health issue comes along at an hour beyond the regular appointment timing of the MTF. For those spontaneous moments, it is okay to find an Urgent Care clinic to fit your needs. For clarification, the TRICARE website explains the details of this choice in an online post, “Get Familiar with Your Emergency and Urgent Care Options”.
Coping with COVID-19 Stress
No matter if you are feeling anxiety over a PCS in the middle of a pandemic, or, if you are facing stress from how the Coronavirus seems to keep changing your “regularly scheduled programming”, there IS support, ready and waiting -
Counseling with your physician
Counseling with a Chaplain
Military & Family Life Counseling from MilitaryOneSource
Keep in mind, you are not alone. It is heartwarming to know a helping hand is as close as an easy keyboard click, or, simply a phone call away. You’ll just need to make the first move to reach out and seek the help that you are welcome to find.
Changes with TRICARE Reserve Select
If you were enrolled in TRICARE Reserve Select but were unable to make payments for the premium due to the impact of the COVID-19 situation, check in with a TRICARE representative in your region. Currently, there is a grace period for reinstatement. This window may give you time to cover any unpaid premiums and fees. For more details on the changes to the policies and procedures, take a look at the TRICARE Reserve Select webpage - https://tricare.mil/Plans/Enroll/TRS/Premiums
Before you take off, maybe add a bottle of hand sanitizer to your cupholder? Or, think about having a mask handy? (If not for you, then wear a mask for those of vulnerable health in each state you’ll travel through). Along every mile, know that your military family is wishing you safe travels!
