What Are Your Rights in Base Housing?

What do you like about base housing? What do you wish was different? When signing a lease at the housing office, you DO have a list of rights. Check out this post for what you can expect as a tenant and what we are hoping will improve -
Spending Friday nights around your neighbors fire pit. Having your kiddos safely roam from yard to yard with their band of friends. Making it to your work so quickly that you’ll barely begin sipping on your traveler of coffee. These are a few of the perks of living in military housing. Expressing concerns that your base house is not safe to live in should not be a part of your daily life. Yet for an abundance of military families, moving into sub par housing is the only option when choosing to live on an installation.
Thankfully, there have been enough active duty members and spouses raising their voices about the rough living conditions in base housing that a handful of representatives on Capitol Hill began to listen. In February, the Secretary of Defense, Mark Esper, signed a “Tenant Bill of Rights”, defining what a military member should indeed have while residing at their current assignment. Placing it into action by May 1st, this multi-point list includes:
