What to do for Halloween in a Coronavirus-Era

Grabbing my broom to do a basic porch sweep this morning, I opened the door to find a surprise on the “Welcome” mat. Someone had given us a goodie bag with a note saying, “You’ve Been Boo’ed!”

Upon accepting this random act of kindness, I was challenged to copy the “Boo’ed” sign and compile 2 goodie bags to give to others in “ding-dong-ditch” style (aka anonymously). Not only was this unexpected gift a generous surprise, it began a pattern of Halloween cheer that would spread faster than hot gossip throughout the neighborhood.

With the sense of fellowship that military housing often brings, a similar festive effort also took place near Thanksgiving with a “Blessing Bag”. Additionally, a chilly December day brought a treat with a note, “You’ve Been Jingled” by that often ornery but always polite, Elf on the Shelf.

I recall how these small gestures were particularly meaningful for us military families who would celebrate the Holidays miles away from our parents and relatives.

Presently, if taking precautions for health and safety, I think a person could continue this festive gift bag activity. Consider these giftage ideas -

  • Think about items to give that are in factory-sealed packaging

  • Maybe add in a bottle of hand sanitizer?

  • If sewing up fabric facemasks, possibly add in a covering in seasonal colors

  • Goodness knows even a roll or two of toilet paper would be a cherished gift!

  • Although it’s tricky to know what allergies the recipient could have, to be on the safe side, try to stay away from any sort of peanut infused snack

Pondering what to give with this anonymous favor is a fun part of the task!

Halloween

A big part of the Halloween holiday for children (and, let’s be honest, it’s a hoot for grown-up’s too!) is dressing up in costume. Looking at the city website for our area, the community will rally, with candy safely available, for a “wave parade” (hand waving at homemade floats going by) rather than having house to house candy gathering. Depending on what “the powers that be” (civic leaders) decree for your neighborhood, you might have to change up what your kiddos do while dressed in costume.

Thinking of how to celebrate and reach out to others, it may be cool to contact a local care facility for the elderly. Maybe find out what time the residents may be near their windows? Through the looking glass, imagine this -

  • A pint size Captain America can raise his shield, defending the universe

  • A mini Wonder Woman could twirl her lasso, bringing justice to all

  • A wee little pumpkin, still a babe in arms, can wiggle their chubby legs

Rather than passing out candy, the “treat” could be the joy that a Senior Citizen may feel upon seeing an adorable little one in their Halloween costume. Am pretty sure the child will also get a kick out of being in the spotlight and seeing the happy smiles they are bringing!

Even with social distancing, if the costumed crusaders end up with more candy than they have a need for, keep this website in mind, https://www.operationgratitude.com. Taking a look at the halloween-candy-give-back-program link may be an option for any surplus of sweets.
